Catawba Cotons: A Legacy of Love

When I was completing college back in 2003 my mother introduced me to a small white dog named Moses. He was sweet and eager to meet new people. Throughout my life I watched my mother struggle with severe allergies. She spent almost 31 years as a Marine and a large part of her military career she was part of the dog fancying world. I grew up with people wearing BDU’s during the week. Then on the weekend I was under grooming tables watching people run in circles with anything from corgi’s to poodles, the one breed that wouldn’t cause a reaction with my mother’s allergies.

Unfortunately, as my mother got older showing and grooming such large dogs became quite difficult. This was problematic since she moved around quite a lot. As she aged into retirement I feared that her ability to own a dog would be severely limited. But Moses would change my mother’s life and my opinion about small dogs, forever.

He was fun, energetic, quick to get into a car, and even faster to make his way into her lap. When she needed comfort, he was there. If she had something that required her attention, he would be at her feet, quietly waiting for her to finish. My mother fell in love and decided to begin breeding. Her goal was a healthy, stable, structurally sound dog, with a huge personality, just like Moses.

It was because of her dedication to this little breed, that I was able to watch the Coton go from a unrecognized breed to a fully recognized breed. Knowing she had played a small role in it’s journey to the AKC registry made me proud. It also allowed me to see how much these dogs impacted the lives of the people who owned them. I would read emails, look at update photos of the puppies I helped my mother raise, and know that our Cotons had given their owners so much joy.

That’s when I knew I wanted to be a part of this breed, and continue the legacy my mother began. Being able to provide people with the same happiness to others that Moses brought my mother. Though our program is small, our hearts for our dogs are big, and we are proud to say every Coton pictured on this site, along with our stock dogs came from my mothers original kennel. As we continue her legacy we hope that you will join our extended Coton family.
