Commitment to Health and Wellness
Due to the natural hardiness of the breed, many Cotons outlive their well-bred counterparts by many years. The are a "tough go get them" little dog and rarely have many health issues. Despite this relatively common longevity, it is the goal of Catawba Cotons to always provide the healthiest puppy we can. We do that through comprehensive DNA testing of all our stock and assessments on hips and elbows at the appropriate age. At this time our stock is extremely small as we are focusing on breeding as genetically clear (of all markers) dogs as possible. As research continues to move forward and reveals more genetic markers to evaluate the health of our breed, Catawba Cotons will continue to assess our dogs as much as possible. To ensure our Cotons and your new Coton, are the healthiest they can be. Below you will find a short list of the breed specific genes we test for, the 205 other genes that are checked are not listed as all of our puppies and stock are completely clear of them. This list is not comprehensive and only provides genes that are particularly concerning for Cotons. For further genetic information on Cotons or any breed please check with Embark.
